What's the deal with Freedom and inconsistent head size in same bunch we're seeing lately ? We're also seeing smaller and smaller heads (from different farms). Older plants? Weather? TIAA

While overall I'm seeing some smaller heads, it is across the board and not really exclusive to Freedoms. Many growers predicted the effects would be felt after Valentine's, and there haven't been exactly a glut of freedoms on the market either which would lead to the conclusion of a tighter market.

On the plus side, I had a grower send me another red (an exclusive variety) to try, under the condition that I take a bunch of them and a bunch of my standing freedoms (Rio) and put them out. I did this on the afternoon of Feb. 23rd (last Tuesday) and for the first two days I was impressed by the newcomer. Bigger head, velvety texture, made the Rio freedoms look small. However, as the week went on, the freedoms continued to open and develop and by Monday, the newcomer was not so nice. As of when I left the office today the freedoms still look great, and the newcomer is in the dumpster.

As far as other varieties, Tinto and Charlene both impress me. Sexy red and Forever Young are nice but underwhelm me but I understand that is a personal taste thing. Up until recently we still sold a lot of Charlottes, but they are really on the way out and as of next week we won't be carrying them for cooler stock as I've observed that they are the last reds pulled and only when the others are gone.

The freedoms I get from San Fran have been consistantly great. I continue to try other reds from other farms, but none last as well. I still love the forever yours for longevity, and the charlottes for their open form. I tried sexy red and many others this V-day, but the favorite from our customers contnues to be freedom.

RED`s in general are a "tough cookie", I know they are several newcomers: Sexy Red, Red Paris, Lotus just to name a few.

I am not a big fan of freedoms because they simply dont preform in my opinion nor do they open. I have actually been getting a new exclusive rose called Red Bentley from Esmeralda has anyone seen this rose? Wanted to see if anyones experience is as good as mine?

Pretty Rose but so far our informal test have Freedom lasting longer. Rio has a Pretty one called Corazone but have not tested it yet.

Funny my test showed that the red bentley lasts a good 4 days longer than the freedom both in oasis and water. When did you do the test? Maybe it was still a young plant. Maybe a Freedom vs Red bentley vase life test on flowers and cents? Ill supply the red Bentley who will do the freedom...

In fact you are correct in that it was from the first samples Esmeralda sent out so I like the idea of a test. There are a number of growers here so who wants to put their Freedom up against Red Bentley in a vase life test? This is just a test of vase life because even it the Bentley wins there is not enough in producton to supply a big party yet. I am sure my friends at Esmeralda would be happy to supply the RB

The test I referred to was a red bentley. The vase life and opening wasn't even close. As I said I did this at the end of Feb.

Esmeralda is supposed to send me some more sometime to try again as they were quite surprised at the results. I'm game.

I got some Corazons last week, but haven't gotten much feedback on them yet. They were pretty, but we ran low on reds and I didn't want to waste an expensive rose on a test so I sold them all. Shocked

I think to test 2 varieties from 2 different farms, grown in different conditions, different postharvest, and many other variables,is a waste of time.
