Conversation with Carrie, Berger and Charlotte in a restaurant:
Charlotte: "...and he gave me a bunch of carnations, too......"
Berger: "Wow, what a real jerk, bringing you flowers...."
Charlotte: "Oh, but carnations aren't flowers...they're just...fillers......"
Carrie: "Well, I happen to love those pink ones....and I hear they're making a comeback!"
Towards the end of the show, Berger presents Carrie with a 2 dz bunch of pink carnations. The next morning we see the flowers arranged in a pilsner vase, and yes, they look pretty amazing. However, Berger does something to make Carrie furious enough to knock the whole vase over......awww..... (brat!!!) For those of you who haven't seen this week's show, I'll save the surprise.
The tragic end nonewithstanding, it'll be interesting to see whether this will take on.....if there's one provacateur of a trend, "Sex in the City" should be it, dontcha think? Let me know if you suddenly get calls for pink carnations!

The way I took it was that Charlotte was complainng that she received those horrible filler flowers, carnations, when she should have recieved roses. Then Carrie defended the carnations.

As we near the anniversary of this thread (wow!):
"The Flowers of Japan and The Art of Floral Arrangement The 100-Year-Old Ikebana Classic" by Josiah Conder.
Written by "a British architect invited to Japan at the end of the nineteenth century to help create Japan's first Western-style buildings. Conder remained there for the rest of his life, and his love of the country and its culture inspired him to undertake years of study of Japanese painting, gardens, and flower arrangement."
The book was actually first published in Tokyo in 1891, at the height of the Meiji Restoration.
My favorite excerpt:
"As one exponent of the art has quaintly expressed it, the artist must be thoroughly imbued with a sympathetic feeling for the character, habits, virtues, and weaknesses of the members of the floral kingdom from which he seeks his material, till he possesses almost the same love and tenderness for their qualities as for those of living beings."

My son was in an Ikebana gathering in Japan last week. He had a great time, likened it to a quilting circle here at home.

Priests, philosophers, men of rank who have retired from public life have been its most enthusiastic followers.' " Had your son visited Japan back in the day (a few hundred years ago?) he could've started his own school and been an iemoto! (Umm...a gathering...tea and wagashi...)  |
